The Story
In the hot and humid climate of southern China, the Lingnan region has developed a unique urban landscape shaped by arcaded buildings, ancestral halls, temples, and gardens. These traditional structures are not isolated monuments—they are deeply woven into everyday life. They served as stages for folk performance, vessels of exquisite craftsmanship, and living records of southern China’s urban civilization.
Historically seen as a “peripheral” region far from the political heartland, Lingnan has long stood at the crossroads of tradition and innovation. Its distance from central authority often allowed for experimentation—culturally, politically, and architecturally. This spirit lives on in Lingnan buildings: rooted in tradition yet open to fusion and reinvention; faithful to local identity yet unafraid of change.
This journey takes you through four key cities in the Pearl River Delta—Guangzhou, Foshan, Jiangmen, and Shenzhen—offering a wide spectrum of architectural forms, from Qing dynasty clan halls and fusion-style watchtowers to modern skyscrapers and cutting-edge tech campuses.
