The Story
This journey curates the finest gardens of Suzhou and Hangzhou, each unveiling a distinct facet of China’s timeless ideal: urban oases springing from the philosophy of mountain reclusion.
In Suzhou—a city of waterways and flatlands— discover how garden masters created worlds using scholar's rocks (fantastic limestone sculptures), weaving wild nature into the urban landscape. As you wander through UNESCO-listed gardens, you'll enter a living "city mountainscape" where tiny courtyards and vast lakeside estates each breathe with its own poetic spirit.
In Hangzhou, the city dissolves into hills and lakes. Stroll along willow-fringed causeways of West Lake—where leaning pagodas and literati retreats emerge then vanish in shifting mists—and feel how architecture effortlessly dissolves into the natural canvas. Here, human spaces become one with the land: a seamless whole where poetry breathes in every breeze.
Through walking, viewing, dwelling, and contemplative drifting, you’ll decode the Daoist poetics embedded in both landscapes. Witness how centuries-old design wisdom continues to inspire sustainable cities today. Suzhou and Hangzhou reveal complementary visions of harmonious living: crafted microcosms within walls versus seamless fusion with wilderness, unveiling the boundless creativity of Chinese landscape design.
