Horizon: A Journey of the Modernity in Northern Europe

Norway, Sweden, Denmark

The Story

This journey travels through Sweden, Norway, and Finland, visiting 30 landmark works of modern Nordic architecture. It explores how leading architects of the region have understood the relationship between people, buildings, objects, and nature, with a special focus on the elusive presence of the “horizon” in their creations.

The collective contribution of Nordic architects holds irreplaceable significance for contemporary design and craftsmanship. Their interpretations of nature and interior, light and shadow, classicism and modernity, everyday life and poetry, remain deeply inspiring. Among them, Gunnar Asplund’s translation of classical traditions, Sigurd Lewerentz’s treatment of materiality, Alvar Aalto’s expression of the everyday life, and Sverre Fehn’s reflections on architecture within nature are particularly striking. Works by architects such as Ragnar Östberg, Eliel Saarinen, Ralph Erskine, and Reima and Raili Pietilä are also included in this inspiring itinerary.
