Between Mountain and Ocean: Architecture of Chile and Peru
Chile, Peru
The Story
This journey explores the rich tapestry of South America through four key cities and regions: Santiago, Valparaíso, Lima, and Cusco. It presents a curated dialogue between two strikingly different architectural landscapes: the finest colonial-era masterpieces and the region's most acclaimed contemporary works. Through carefully selected projects, you will discover a South America seldom seen—a continent where Peru's ancient Inca heritage and colonial splendors stand in profound contrast to Chile's pioneering spirit in modern design.
Highlights include UNESCO World Heritage locations such as Machu Picchu and the historic center of Cusco, alongside works by Pritzker Prize laureates Alejandro Aravena (2016) and Grafton Architects (2020). The latter's Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) in Lima represents a significant case study in institutional architecture and topographic integration.
The itinerary further engages with urban history and public space, visiting major cities and including projects related to slum renewal. This journey is more than a tour; it is an immersive exploration of how history, culture, and bold contemporary vision are woven into the built environment of Chile and Peru.
