Coexistence of Classical and Modern Newland: Modernism Architecture of Argentina and Uruguay

As the political and cultural heart of Latin America, the cities along the Río de la Plata became one of the key starting points of Latin American modernist architecture. What may surprise you here is the interplay between classical and modern architectural languages, and the careful yet dramatic fusion of diverse ideas and forms.

This journey visits five major cities and regions — Buenos Aires, La Plata, Mar del Plata, Montevideo, and Iguazú. It includes works by renowned Latin American architects such as Clorindo Testa, Amancio Williams, and Julio Vilamajó. Highlights feature Le Corbusier’s only completed project in Latin America, the Curutchet House, as well as Casa del Puente, one of the most important works in the history of modern architecture in Latin American. The itinerary also focuses on the making of urban public spaces, surveying city planning and waterfront redevelopments in La Plata, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo.
