This journey features 31 modern architecture buildings and 5 traditional gardens, offering a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of Japanese architecture from tradition to modernity. Starting from Hiroshima, which is the symbolic beginning of postwar Japanese architecture, it ventures deep into the heart of Japan, visiting Kansai and the towns around the Seto Inland Sea, including Kochi, Okayama, Takamatsu, Naoshima, Teshima, Kyoto etc.
In Hiroshima, witness the postwar reconstruction of Japanese cities and the rise of modern architecture. In Kochi and Kagawa, explore distinctive local constructions where modern and traditional approaches meet. Around the Seto Inland Sea, discover the sparks generated by the encounter between art and architecture driven by new thoughts and ideas. In Kyoto, experience the essence of Japanese beauty through its historic temples and gardens.
Highlights include influential works from the Metabolism period by architects such as Kenzo Tange and Masato Otaka, along with representative projects by Hiroshi Hara, Yoshio Taniguchi, Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Hiroshi Naito, Kengo Kuma, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, Hiroshi Sambuichi, and Takuji Nakamura.
