Japan
The Story
This journey focuses on the study of Japan’s historic architecture and gardens, with Nara and Kyoto as its destinations, the cities that once served as vital stages for cultural exchange between China and Japan. The journey examines the principles behind the siting and construction of temples in the ancient capitals, retraces significant historical events, and approaches Japanese architecture through the combined lenses of geography and history. The itinerary covers cities and buildings from different eras, tracing the evolution of Japanese architecture and inviting reflection on its enduring qualities. Along the way, participants will visit 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and numerous National Treasures of Japan.
Beyond historic architecture, the program also offers encounters with Japanese gardens, from the Pure Land garden of Joruri-ji, the Zen gardens of Daitoku-ji to the celebrated Rurikoin. Enjoy walking on Mount Hiei and along Lake Biwa, and experiencing the vibrant Gion Festival—blending urban exploration with moments immersed in nature.
