Late Style: Modern and Classical Architecture of India and Bangladesh

India, Bangladesh

The Story

The architectural works of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn from their later years in the East exhibit the characteristics of a robust "late style". This style persistently divides problems, exposes contradictions, accentuates intense conflicts and struggles, and even negates any potential for reconciling these contradictions.

The planned excursion through modern and classical architecture in India and Bangladesh retraces its steps extensively in these countries. It meticulously examines the late personal styles of the architects and ultimately traces back to the pain and solutions emerging from the ancient civilization of the Ganges basin. This journey features about 20 classic works, encompassing the architectural practices of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn in India and Bangladesh, as well as the notable works of Balkrishna Doshi, the 2018 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate. Given the similar conditions of engaging with these multiple "late styles," we anticipate that the exploration of "late style" across these enigmatic nations will offer a dimension for self-reflection.
