Mestizo Modernities: Modern Architecture of Argentina and Brazil

Argentina, Brazil

The Story

In the 20th century, Latin American countries experienced modernization, rapid urbanization, and social reforms earlier than China. Many of the realities they faced are similar to those of China. The extensive architectural practices in Latin America not only allow us to reflect upon our own conditions but also provide inspiration for the current development of Chinese architecture and its future.

The journey of Latin American modern architecture spans across Brazil and Argentina, visiting five major cities: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Buenos Aires, and La Plata. This journey deeply investigates 40 representative works by renowned Latin American planners and architects, such as Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, and Paulo Mendes da Rocha, generating an overview of the two well-known urban plannings of Brasília and La Plata, the renovation of the port in Rio, and the creation of urban public spaces in Latin America.
