Rediscovery in Transformation: Architecture in Denmark and Sweden
Denmark, Sweden
The Story
In the early 20th century, Nordic architects began to search for their own distinct architectural identity. Nordic Classicism laid an aesthetic foundation for the emergence of modern Nordic architecture. Responding thoughtfully to the prevailing architectural movements of their time, generations of Nordic architects engaged with local landscapes and culture, ultimately achieved inspiring results and shaped the unique architectural character of the region.
This journey explores a selection of Nordic masterpieces spanning nearly 80 years, from early to late 20th century. It offers a systematic study of representative works by five important Nordic architects: Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon, and Peter Celsing. Together they trace a clear trajectory from the search for identity, to the encounter with modernism, and finally to an enduring place in architectural history.
Beyond architecture, the program also highlights interior and furniture design, returning to the birthplace of “Nordic Design” to experience its authentic spirit.
