Toyo lto and TlT School: A Contemporary Path of Japanese Architecture

Japan

The Story

This special architectural journey through Japan is framed around the country’s three major academic lineages: the University of Tokyo school led by Kunio Maekawa and Kenzo Tange, the Waseda school associated with Togo Murano and Kiyonori Kikutake, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology school represented by Kazuo Shinohara and Kazunari Sakamoto. The focus will be on the TlT school, the clearest in terms of continuity. The focus is also on the work of Toyo Ito, an architect who transcends boundaries and stands at the intersection of these schools.

Spanning Kyushu, Kansai, and Kanto, this itinerary covers more than 30 works that offer a multidimensional understanding of contemporary Japanese architecture.

The journey includes visits to the works of Togo Murano, Takamasa Yoshizaka, and Kazuo Shinohara, all towering figures in the history of Japanese architecture, as well as to projects by contemporary masters such as Toyo Ito, Kazunari Sakamoto, Kazuyo Sejima, and Terunobu Fujimori. Accommodations feature high-quality design hotels that embody the essence of Japanese aesthetics.
